Day 3: Kampala to Mpigi to Jinja – Bark Cloth and the Source of the Nile

Bark cloth is made from the inner bark of the mutuba tree and has been used for clothing, bedding, and rituals for centuries. A master artisan will guide you through the entire process: harvesting the bark, beating it with wooden mallets, and drying it into soft, earth coloured cloth. You can try beating the bark yourself. After a picnic lunch, continue east to Jinja, approximately two hours. Upon arrival, you will board a small boat to the Source of the Nile. Stand at the precise point where John Hanning Speke identified the Nile’s start in 1862. Your Busoga guide will share the spiritual significance of the river, including legends of the river god and the rituals performed for fertility and harvest.
