5 Days Uganda Source of the Nile & Murchison Falls – Water & Wilderness

Source of the Nile Safari
Safari Overview: Source of the Nile Safari
Uganda is a land blessed with two of Africa’s most spectacular water based wonders: the world’s longest river and its most powerful waterfall. This 5 Day Uganda Source of the Nile & Murchison Falls expedition combines the thrill of white water rafting at the exact spot where the Nile begins its 6,650 kilometer journey to the Mediterranean with the raw power of Murchison Falls, where the entire Nile is forced through a seven meter gorge. You will explore the lush countryside around Jinja, take a boat to the source of the Nile, and then venture into Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest protected area. Here you will track elephants, giraffes, lions, and buffalo on game drives, then feel the spray of the falls on a launch cruise. Africa Exotic Safaris has designed this itinerary for travelers who love both adventure and wildlife, offering a perfect blend of water activities and wilderness encounters. From the roar of the rapids to the thunder of the falls, this journey celebrates Uganda’s liquid heart.

After a hearty breakfast, you will drive east for approximately two and a half hours to Jinja, Uganda’s adventure capital. The road winds through lush countryside, tea plantations, and sugar cane fields. Upon arrival, you will head straight to the Source of the Nile. Board a small motorised boat and cross the calm waters to the exact point where John Hanning Speke declared the Nile’s source in 1862. A small marker and a simple monument stand there. Your guide will explain the history of the explorers who searched for the Nile. After this serene experience, you will have lunch at a riverside restaurant overlooking the rapids. In the afternoon, you have a choice of activities. For adrenaline seekers, grade 5 white water rafting on the Nile is an unforgettable experience. For those preferring a calmer pace, a sunset boat cruise on the Nile or a visit to a local community project and craft market are excellent options. En route, you will stop at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the only place in Uganda where you can track wild southern white rhinos on foot. Accompanied by an armed ranger, you will walk through the bush to approach a rhino family. These magnificent animals were reintroduced after being poached to extinction in Uganda. You will learn about the conservation efforts and have the opportunity to photograph them from a safe distance. After this unique experience, enjoy a picnic lunch at the sanctuary. Continue to Murchison Falls National Park, crossing the Nile on a ferry at the Paraa crossing. You will arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon, check in, and then set out for a short evening game drive on the northern banks. Look for Rothschild’s giraffes, hartebeests, and elephants. Return to the lodge for dinner as the African night falls.

Day 4: Game Drive and Launch Cruise to Murchison Falls – Thunder and Spray

Source of the Nile Safari
Wake before dawn for an early morning game drive on the delta of the Nile. This is the best time to see predators returning from a night of hunting. Your guide will search for lions, leopards, hyenas, and the large herds of elephants and buffalo that gather near the river. After a picnic breakfast in the bush, continue your drive until late morning. Return to the lodge for lunch and a rest. In the afternoon, you will embark on a three hour launch cruise up the Nile towards the base of Murchison Falls. This is a wildlife spectacle in itself. You will see hundreds of hippos grunting and splashing, crocodiles basking on sandbanks, and elephants drinking at the water’s edge. Fish eagles, kingfishers, and saddle billed storks are everywhere. As you approach the falls, the river narrows and the current quickens. Suddenly, you see the spray rising high into the air. The roar becomes deafening. The entire Nile is forced through a seven meter wide gap, plunging 43 meters into the Devil’s Cauldron below. Your captain will hold the boat steady as you take photos. After the cruise, you will drive to the top of the falls for a short hike to the viewpoint. Stand just feet from where the water explodes over the edge, feeling the mist on your face. Return to the lodge for a farewell dinner.
